The Death Zone:
What Really Happens to Your Body Above 8,000m

Above eight thousand metres, there is not enough oxygen for the body to survive for long. This is the science of what that does.

The death zone above 8,000 metres

Mountaineers call it the death zone, and the name is not poetry. Above roughly 8,000 metres, the atmospheric pressure is so low that the human body cannot absorb enough oxygen to sustain its own cells. No one acclimatises there. Everyone, given time, dies there. This is what actually happens.

Cellular Suffocation

At sea level your lungs take in about 21% oxygen. Above 8,000 metres that effective concentration drops to roughly a third. Every organ begins to fail in slow motion. The brain starves first, then the body begins to consume itself for fuel. Climbers describe the zone as a state of deliberate, supervised dying — performed between deep breaths.

HACE and HAPE

The two killers are HACE (high-altitude cerebral edema) and HAPE (high-altitude pulmonary edema). In HACE, fluid leaks into the brain and it swells; in HAPE, fluid fills the lungs. Both can kill within hours if the climber does not descend. Above 8,000 metres there is no rescue — only down.

Why Oxygen Changes Everything

Supplemental oxygen does not remove the danger, but it roughly triples the oxygen available and buys the body hours of function.
