Raised on the Silhouette of an 8,000-Metre Hope

From the farmlands below Makalu, he grew up facing the shape of a giant — and learned to carry a rope toward it for the rest of his life.

For Nima Sherpa, the mountains were not a distant ambition. They were the first thing he saw from the fields of his home below Makalu — the fifth-highest peak on Earth and the shape of a hope that had sourced him since childhood. Every guide who comes from a mountain village carries that silhouette inside them; Nima carried one of the truest of all.

A Village in the Shadow of Makalu

Born into a farming family, Nima spent his early years in the terraces and pastures of a place where altitude was a daily companion. The silhouette of Makalu rose over every season of his boyhood, and it was toward that towering figure that he eventually turned his steps. The path from field to guide was long, but the mountain itself never left his line of sight.

A Guide on the West Ridge
